SHILLONG, SEPT 8: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) said it does not oppose any government that works for the benefit of the people in collaboration with the local community.
“We will not oppose any government which brings benefits through cooperation with the locality. What we have opposed is when the government tramples and forcibly snatches away the rights of the people,” KSU CEC Environment Secretary Shiningstar Kharbihkhiew said.
He was speaking after administering the oath to the new office bearers of the KSU Mynkrem Unit at Mynkrem village in West Jaintia Hills on September 7.
Kharbihkhiew said KSU comes forward only when public interest and public peace are disturbed by government actions.
He also advised youth to avoid early marriage and to consider parenthood only after securing stable livelihood, saying early marriage leads to downfall of the community.
KSU CEC Information & Publicity Secretary Pynshai Kupar Dkhar urged the new unit to be proactive.
“In this world, there are three groups – those who only watch what happens in society, those who make things happen, and the majority who don’t know what happens. You should be among those who see and also act to improve society,” Dkhar said.
The meeting was chaired by KSU West Jaintia Hills District General Secretary Leningrad Tariang and attended by KSU West Jaintia Hills District President Laitphar Syngkrem, KSU East Jaintia Hills Finance Secretary Shaniahskhem Dkhar, KSU Jowai Circle General Secretary Nipoi Shadap and the headman of Mynkrem.The newly formed Mynkrem Unit falls under the Laskein Circle.
The programme was marked by participation of villagers and cultural performances by women and youth of the village.
