SHILLONG, AUG 24: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday came out strongly in support of Advocate General Amit Kumar, whose removal has been demanded by the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association.

Sangma said he has not examined the details of the Bar Association’s statement but asserted that the government is fortunate to have Kumar as AG.

“I have not gone into the details of the statement and the arguments that were made. All I want to say is that Meghalaya is very lucky to have a person like Amit Kumar as our Advocate General,” the Chief Minister said.

He said serving and retired officials and cabinet ministers would vouch for Kumar’s contribution, adding that with due respect to past AGs and those in other states, the present government is happy with his performance.

“He has worked dedicatedly for the people and the state and guided the government in many crucial matters. Things could have been very complicated if he was not there. He helped many departments overcome legal hurdles with passion and dedication,” Sangma said.

Declining to comment on the merits of the demand for removal, the CM said Kumar had chosen to serve Meghalaya over lucrative practice in the Supreme Court.

“We are happy and grateful that Amit Kumar has decided to always be with us. He has the choice to be in any part of the country and practice independently in the Supreme Court in Delhi, but he chose to give his prime time to the people and government of Meghalaya. We are grateful for that,” Sangma added.
