Guwahati, August 20: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said he had spoken to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over the violence that erupted in Shillong during a Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) black-flag bike rally on August 19 and the subsequent reactions in Assam.
In a post on X, Sangma said, “We have agreed to work together, as always, to normalise the situation,” adding that designated Cabinet ministers from Assam and Meghalaya would meet to take the discussions forward and explore ways to restore “peace, trust and normalcy.”

Sangma also appealed to people in both states to maintain peace, harmony and restraint, stressing the longstanding ties between Assam and Meghalaya.
“Meghalaya and Assam share deep bonds, and we must work together to protect them,” he said.
The outreach between the two chief ministers comes a day after a KSU black-flag motorcycle rally in Shillong escalated into violence, with several vehicles reportedly vandalised, people assaulted and public property damaged. Government vehicles were also reportedly set on fire, while statues of Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose were allegedly vandalised.

The violence has since spilled over into Assam, with tensions reported along the Assam-Meghalaya border. Assam-registered vehicles were among those reportedly targeted during the Shillong unrest.
The developments triggered protests by drivers and transport operators in Assam, including at Khanapara, with demands for security and action over the attacks on vehicles travelling between the two states.
