Guwahati, June 12: Railway Police detained nine suspected illegal Bangladeshi nationals travelling on the Silchar-Guwahati Express during a verification drive on Thursday.
The detained group comprised seven men, one woman and two children. They were travelling on Train No. 15616 from Badarpur to Guwahati when fellow passengers reportedly grew suspicious and alerted railway authorities.
Acting on the information, railway personnel intercepted the passengers and carried out an identity verification exercise. During preliminary questioning and document checks, the individuals allegedly failed to produce valid Indian identity documents or proof of citizenship, officials said.
The detainees were subsequently taken into custody for further verification.
According to Railway Police sources, investigators suspect that the group may have entered Assam through the India-Bangladesh border in Cachar district before boarding the train. Authorities are also examining whether the detainees are linked to a larger network involved in facilitating illegal cross-border movement.
The detained individuals are currently being held at the Paltan Bazar Railway Police station, where officials are conducting further inquiries to ascertain their identities and citizenship status.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing, and appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings of the verification process.
