Judge new party on organization, not social media wave: Meghalaya CM on new CJP buzz

SHILLONG, JUN 8: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday steered clear of direct remarks on the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP), saying it was too early to assess a political outfit that is yet to establish its organisational base.

Asked for his views while speaking to the media, Sangma said the strength of any party lies in its structure and constitutional framework, not in short-term public attention.

“I don’t have any comment on any political party as such because a party requires organisation, a base, and certain constitutional aspects. So, I think as and when the party builds up as an organisation, only then can we comment,” he said.

The NPP chief pointed to the role of digital platforms in shaping perception, but underlined the difference between a movement and a full-fledged political party.

“Right now, yes, there is a certain wave that can happen in today’s world. Social media can be very powerful, and so it is very possible to connect different issues with different stands. Individuals and programmes may take, but a political party is beyond a movement. A movement is the beginning. So therefore, it is a long way to go. We have to wait and watch how things shape up and how things end up,” Sangma said.

He stressed that longevity in politics depends on consistency rather than initial buzz.

“As I said, running a political party is not so simple. There are a lot of challenges, and there are consistency and stability. How you run the party in the long run is what matters. Initial hype will always be there as it depends on the issues, but what is important is the consistency and stability in the long run of the organisation,” the chief minister added.
