Guwahati, May 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strengthened its foothold in the Northeast after securing victories in the Assembly by-elections in Nagaland’s Koridang and Tripura’s Dharmanagar constituencies, with results declared on Monday.

In Nagaland, BJP candidate Daochier I. Imchen won the Koridang (ST) seat, which fell vacant following the death of veteran leader Imkong L. Imchen. His closest rival, Congress nominee T. Chalukumba Ao—who had earlier contested the 2023 Assembly polls on a JD(U) ticket—failed to mount a strong challenge. The withdrawal of BJP leader Imchainba Jamir from the race helped consolidate support behind Imchen.

In Tripura, BJP’s Jahar Chakraborti clinched the Dharmanagar seat, defeating Congress candidate Chayan Bhattacharjee and CPI(M)’s Amitabha Datta. The bypoll was necessitated by the death of Speaker and four-time MLA Biswa Bandhu Sen.

Both constituencies recorded strong voter turnout during polling held on April 9. Koridang registered a turnout of 75.06 per cent—the highest among all seats—while Dharmanagar saw 70.09 per cent participation, indicating robust voter engagement.
