Guwahati, March 23: Tensions within the Assam Congress escalated after party workers vandalised their own office in Bijni on Saturday and attacked a photograph of noted Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, following discontent over ticket allocation.
According to reports, the incident took place at the Block Congress Committee office in Bijni, where agitated workers protested the party’s decision not to field a candidate from the constituency. The protest soon turned violent, with workers damaging property inside the office.
In a striking display of anger, the protesters also targeted a photograph of Zubeen Garg displayed on the premises, repeatedly hitting it with chairs.
The incident has triggered sharp reactions, particularly over the attack on the image of the popular cultural icon, raising questions about internal discipline within the party and its handling of dissent.
Reacting to the incident, Assam cabinet minister Pijush Hazarika said in a post on X:
“So this criminal who kicked the portrait of #BelovedZubeen is a born and bred Congress leader. His name is Sadullaha Sikdar (no surprise). He and his brother, Abu Sikdar, are hardcore Congress supporters. Family has blessings of @ripunbora and @rakibul_inc and of course @GauravGogoiAsm!”
