Tura, Feb 14: In a major breakthrough in the January murder case at Goalgaon village under Rajabala, West Garo Hills Police have arrested a key accused who had fled to Tripura, taking the total number of arrests in the case to 13.
The murder, which claimed the life of a member of an ACHIK organisation, had triggered tension in the Rajabala area last month.
Police said one of the prime accused, Mozidul Islam of Bhaitbari in Rajabala, had been evading arrest and was hiding in Agartala, Tripura. Acting on specific inputs, a special team from West Garo Hills was dispatched to Agartala on February 12. Islam was traced to a rented accommodation and apprehended after a coordinated operation. He was brought to Tura under police escort and produced before a local court on Friday, which remanded him to judicial custody.
Earlier, on the night of February 9, police conducted a raid at Bhaitbari and arrested another accused, Gulbahar Sheikh (45). Two days later, Mominul Hoque (40) was apprehended from Sidakandi village in Rajabala during a follow-up operation.
Police have not ruled out further arrests as the investigation progresses.
