Nongpoh, Feb 3: The Ri Bhoi District Congress Committee (RBDCC) on Tuesday continued its peaceful sit in protest in front of the Indoor Stadium, located near the office of the Deputy Commissioner, to express strong opposition to the BJP led government’s move to replace the MGNREGA scheme with the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), popularly known as the VB-G RAM G Act, 2025.

The protest was led by RBDCC President Rocky Marweiñ, along with party members from Ri Bhoi District and Jirang Block.

The leaders and workers staged the demonstration holding placards, demanding the continuation of the MGNREGA scheme widely known among the public as the “100 days scheme” and condemning the new legislation introduced by the BJP government.

It may be recalled that earlier, the RBDCC had organised a similar peaceful protest at Iew Byrnihat against the Centre’s decision to introduce the new law replacing MGNREGA with the VB-G RAM G scheme.

During the protest, the RBDCC reiterated its firm stand to protect the MGNREGA scheme, describing it as a crucial support system for rural people, especially families with limited employment and income opportunities.

The Ri-Bhoi District Congress Committee also submitted the memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal for urging the Central Government to withdraw the proposed changes and to retain MGNREGA in its original form and implementation, in the larger interest and welfare of the people.
