Shillong, Jan 19: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday inaugurated a Khasi traditional mural at Rymbai Fuel Station in Mawlai Mawiong Rim to mark 20 years of service by Seng Samla Mawlai Pyllun, a prominent local youth organisation.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister congratulated the organisation on its two-decade milestone and underscored the role of traditional youth bodies in Meghalaya’s social and developmental landscape.

“The youth are the most critical section of our society, and traditional youth organisations like the Seng Samlas are important not just for the future, but also for the present of our state,” Sangma said, adding that inclusive governance remains a core principle of the government.

He urged young people to actively engage with state government schemes focused on youth development, skill-building and entrepreneurship, saying these initiatives provide platforms and opportunities to help them compete in an increasingly competitive world.

“While our constitutional safeguards protect our rights, we must not become complacent. We need to prepare ourselves to compete with the best in the world,” the Chief Minister said, expressing hope that the anniversary celebration would inspire youth to become agents of positive change.

Sangma also noted that the newly inaugurated mural, depicting elements of Khasi culture and tradition, would enhance Shillong’s visual landscape and offer a vibrant welcome to tourists entering the city.

During the event, memorandums highlighting local concerns and development needs of the Mawlai area were submitted to the Chief Minister by the Dorbar Shnong and Seng Samla organisations.

The mural inauguration formed part of the year-long celebrations marking two decades of community service by Seng Samla Mawlai Pyllun.
