Itanagar, Dec 11: In a major development, Arunachal Pradesh Police have arrested two persons for allegedly spying for Pakistani handlers.

The duo, identified as Nazir Ahmad Malik and Sabir Ahmed Mir, both residents of Kupwara in Jammu & Kashmir, were arrested on November 21 after police received credible inputs about their suspected involvement in espionage activities.

Nazir was detained first from Ganga village, and based on the information he provided, Sabir was picked up from Abotani Colony the same day.

According to reports, the two had been sharing sensitive information — including details of Army movements and installations in Arunachal Pradesh — with Pakistani handlers through a Telegram channel.

Police officials said the scope of the investigation has now widened, and more arrests are likely.

“This is a very sensitive case and only the beginning of the investigation. We seek cooperation from the public,” a senior police officer said.

The arrested men had reportedly been visiting Arunachal Pradesh for several years, travelling across districts to sell clothes. During these visits, they allegedly ventured into forward areas such as Kibitho, Anini and Tezu, gathering critical information for their handlers.

Police said Nazir admitted during interrogation that he was recruited into spying by Sabir in exchange for monetary benefits.

Both men arrived in the state in April this year and allegedly began their covert activities soon after.
