SHILLONG, DEC 10: The North Eastern Council (NEC), under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDONER), has released Rs 8,46,81,382 in November, for various development programs in Meghalaya.
The funds will support sports and youth infrastructure, bridge connectivity, institutional facilities for skill and technical education, and livelihood-oriented craft clusters, enhancing connectivity and income opportunities.
A modern commercial complex, constructed at Barik Point, Shillong, at a cost of Rs 22.73 crore, was completed on November 11, 2025.
The project, developed by the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation Ltd, aims to transform the existing Gram Shilpa outlet into a vibrant marketplace for Khadi and Village Industries (KVI) products.
The project generates significant direct and indirect employment-from construction-phase workers to sales, management, and maintenance personnel during operation.
By providing a dedicated and modern platform for showcasing KVI products, the Plaza will expand market access for local artisans. This is expected to boost sales and enhance income for those engaged in handicrafts, textiles, leather goods, cosmetics, and food products.

The NEC has released a total of Rs 56,22,37,739 for funding projects across all 8 North Eastern States in November 2025. The funds will support various cultural festivals, seminars, researches, and development initiatives, reflecting NEC’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure development, livelihood enhancement, cultural promotion, research, and innovations in the region.
In addition to state-specific releases, NEC also released Rs 14,89,90,034 to various Central Agencies and Cultural bodies, supporting events such as Purvottar Hindi Samagam, Lamka Youth Summit, North East Riders Meet, and workshops on climate sustainability, among others.
Major project interventions include Community Development Initiatives for Indigenous Groups, establishment of animal feed production and scientific pig breeding units, creation of piggery value chain infrastructure, and strengthening of STINER technology and innovation hubs across the North East. Project support was also extended for development of sports infrastructure in Manipur.
These initiatives were implemented through key Central Agencies, including North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCORMS), North Eastern Development Finance Corporation (NEDFi), CSIR-North East Institute of Science & Technology (CSIR-NEIST), and Education & Research Network (ERNET), among others.
