Guwahati, Nov 3: A tense situation has unfolded along the India-Bangladesh border in the Sribhumi area after a group of Bangladeshi nationals reportedly confronted Border Security Force (BSF) personnel near the Bhanga–Harinagar sector.
According to reports, the incident occurred along the border separating Assam’s Cachar and Karimganj districts from Bangladesh’s Sylhet district, particularly in the Rasulpur area under Ward No. 9 of Manikpur Union, Jakiganj Upazila.
Sources said the Bangladeshi nationals had allegedly entered Indian territory to cultivate vegetables on land near the Surma River.
A team from the 170th Battalion of the BSF, after noticing their activity, approached the area and objected to the ongoing agricultural work.
The BSF personnel reportedly dismantled bamboo fences, temporary sheds, and other makeshift structures erected on the land.
The action allegedly angered the Bangladeshi nationals, who gathered in large numbers and confronted the BSF, shouting abuses and slogans against Indian forces.
Soon after, a large number of residents assembled on the Bangladeshi side of the border, launching anti-India slogans and demonstrations.
Social media platforms in Bangladesh were flooded with posts claiming that the BSF had crossed into Bangladeshi territory, with some users calling for retaliation if such “encroachments” occurred again.
Despite the provocation, BSF personnel maintained their position without retreating, ensuring that the situation did not spiral out of control.
Following the incident, a flag meeting between the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) was held to defuse tension. Both sides reportedly discussed measures to prevent further escalation and maintain peace along the international boundary.
However, reports from the Manikpur border area of Jakiganj indicate that local Bangladeshi residents continue to stir tension, with gatherings and anti-India rhetoric persisting in the region.
Authorities from both nations are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any further breach of peace along the sensitive border.
A senior BSF official said, “An argument between BSF personnel and Bangladeshi nationals took place at the border after a few Bangladeshi nationals crossed over and tried to claim Indian territory. They attempted to use Indian land for cultivation. After the river water receded, the land became visible, and people from the Bangladesh side came here claiming it as their own.”
He added, “It’s a zero line area and belongs to India. It’s a riverine border, and that’s why such problems arise. They have claimed the land; our BSF has counterclaimed. A flag meeting has already been held, and another meeting will take place today.”
