Guwahati, Sept 9: A senior gynaecologist at a civil hospital in Assam’s Morigaon district has been served a showcause notice after performing 21 caesarean deliveries within just 10 hours, raising concerns over patient safety and sterilization protocols.
The notice was issued by the Additional District Commissioner (Health), Morigaon, to Dr. Kantheswar Bordoloi, a medical and health officer, regarding the lower segment caesarean section (LSCS) procedures conducted on September 5 at the hospital’s major operating theatre.
According to the district administration’s letter, Dr. Bordoloi carried out the 21 emergency LSCS operations between 3:40 p.m. on September 5 and 1:50 a.m. on September 6. The administration stated that the matter raised “serious concerns” and directed the doctor to provide a comprehensive report for each case, including details of preparation and sterilization measures.
The doctor has also been asked to clarify the standard operating procedures followed for sterilising surgical instruments during the marathon series of surgeries.
Dr. Bordoloi, however, defended his actions, maintaining that he is fully competent to handle multiple emergency surgeries within a limited timeframe.
