Shillong, Sept 9: Heavy rain on Monday night caused a landslide and brought down trees at Ryndang Briew, Mawlai near Umiam Dam leading to heavy traffic jams in the area.

The incident happened between midnight and early Tuesday morning, blocking vehicles going from Shillong to Ri-Bhoi and those coming back. Commuters had to take the Mawlai Umrynjah–Umroi road instead.

Eyewitnesses said it was lucky the landslide happened early in the morning when fewer people were on the road.

Soon after, officials arrived at the spot and started clearing the debris to make the road safe for traffic again.
