Sohra, Jan 12: A map of Sohra highlighting its landmarks and historic sites of significance could greatly enrich the experience of visitors, enabling them to appreciate the area’s rich history and heritage. This was the sentiment expressed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Sunday after attending the morning mass at the St. John Bosco Shrine in Sohra during the state’s first-ever cabinet retreat.
After the church service, the Chief Minister offered prayers at the relic of St. John Bosco. The life-sized replica of the saint, housed at the church since its arrival from Turin, Italy, in 2006, is revered for containing the bones of St. John Bosco’s right hand.
The Chief Minister also visited the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the oldest Catholic church in Sohra. Built in 1905 by the Society of Divine Saviour Salvatorian, the church has withstood the test of time, standing as a beacon of faith and solace. At its premises, a pine tree planted during the church’s inauguration continues to symbolize the enduring legacy of the missionaries who established the church with a vision of love and compassion.
Reflecting on the area’s potential, Sangma emphasized the importance of mapping and promoting Sohra’s historic landmarks to highlight its unique cultural and historical narrative. The renovation of the Sacred Heart Church last year has preserved its original wooden carvings of Jesus Christ, Joseph, and Mary, showcasing the artisanship and devotion of a bygone era.
As the morning concluded, the Chief Minister’s visit underscored the importance of preserving Sohra’s spiritual and cultural heritage for future generations while encouraging visitors to immerse themselves in its history and charm.
