Nongpoh, Nov 3: In a fatal road accident, two people lost their lives after coming under a truck they were trying to overtake on a sharp curve on Shillong – Guwahati Highway on Sunday morning.
The accident occurred at about 9:48 AM on the Guwahati-Shillong NH – 6 near Shangbangla in Ri-Bhoi District in Meghalaya.
A Royal Enfield Himalayan motorcycle, bearing registration number AS01FF/3367, collided with a truck while attempting to overtake it on a sharp curve, resulting in the deaths of both the rider and the pillion rider.
The motorcyclist, identified as 23-year-old Nilutpal Dowari from Dibrugarh in Assam, was traveling with 21-year-old pillion rider Gargee Chutia from Charaideo in Assam. They were en-route from Guwahati to Shillong when the accident occurred.
As the motorcycle tried to overtake a truck, with registration number AS01RC/0413, moving in the same direction—driven by one Helmi Suting, aged 34 —the rider lost control due to over-speeding at the curve. This caused the bike to collide with the rear tire of the truck, leading to both riders falling beneath the truck. Tragically, the truck ran over them, resulting in immediate death of both at the spot.
Following the incident, police have transported the bodies to the Civil Hospital Morgue in Nongpoh for an inquest and post-mortem examination. The truck driver was medically examined at Nongpoh Civil Hospital, and both vehicles have been seized and kept at the Nongpoh Police Station.
Relatives of the deceased have been informed about the unfortunate incident and asked to report at the branch for taking further necessary action.
