Shillong, July 19: Following the violent unrest in neighbouring Bangladesh, the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has directed all its circles/units to prevent Bangladeshis from entering the border of Khasi – Jaintia Hills.

The directive was given by president of HYC, Roykupar Synrem, who has sent a letter to all the leaders and members of the HYC in the state, cautioning them against a possible ‘invasion’ from Bangladesh due to the volatile situation there.

In the letter, Roykupar said due to the conflict and disruption of peace and order in Bangladesh, foreigners can take advantage of the situation in the country and seek to enter and settle in the Khasi – Jaintia Hills as farmers.

He asked the youth, village authorities and the Hima officials to monitor their areas to ensure that Bangladeshis cannot advantage of the situation in their country and enter the Khasi-Jaintia Hills.

He further cautioned that such people can take advantage of the situation to enter as refugees to seek temporary accommodation but gradually will become full citizens and then it would be very difficult to expel them.

“Therefore, let us think carefully and firmly that we should not allow them to invade Khasi – Jaintia Hills as refugees or temporary residents,” said Synrem.
