Imphal, Aug 25: Manipur external affairs minister R.K Ranjan Singh said that the government has been taking all possible measures to fix the passport related issues arising in the state and urged the public to apply online because internet has been restored in some places of Imphal.

Speaking to media persons, R.K. Ranjan Singh said, “The Passport Seva Kendra, Imphal, has been closed for many months due to the ethnic violence in Imphal. In this context, I would like to inform you, the public, especially that violence erupted in Imphal and that the banning of Internet services compelled the Passport Seva Kendra to close down. However, the urgent cases were already being processed on the request of the person concerned in consultation with the regional passport office, Guwahati.”

“Now the situation has calmed down in Imphal, and in some parts of Imphal, the internet is workable. So, I appeal to those who are willing to apply for passports to apply online, and the personnel interview will be fixed as early as possible in consultation with the regional passport office in Guwahati,” Singh stated.

After the ethnic violence broke out in Manipur, the passport seekers were forced to travel to Guwahati and other states with huge expenses merely to get a passport.

Since May 4, the Passport Seva Kendra in Imphal was defunct after the large scale violence in Imphal.

At least 150 people have been killed and over 400 have been wounded in the violence that began in May.

More than 60,000 people have been forced from their homes as the army, parliamentary forces, and police struggle to quell violence.
