Shillong, April 22: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chief Titosstarwell Chyne has maintained that it has been the Khasi tradition and custom to take the mother’s surname and it shall remain that way.

CEM Chyne said that “it has been there since our forefathers’ time and it is our traditional and customary duty to continue with this practice.”

The Council has always disfavoured the practice of Khasi giving the father’s surname. Notably, the Executive Member (EM) Jambor War on April 9, 2023 mentioned that Khasis who take the surname of his father, cannot be considered a Khasi since it is not as per the matrilineal system.
