Shillong, Jan 05: Seven School Teachers from Meghalaya, who have cleared the Meghalaya Teachers Eligibility Test (MTET), have warned of taking to the streets if they are not given appointment within two weeks.

Phikirbha Khariah, one of the teachers, informed that there were 24 teachers who attempted the MTET exam and only 7 teachers cleared the examination which was held on the 9th of October 2021 after the government increased the recruitment age of the over-aged teachers.

The 7 teachers who cleared the examination are Phikirbha Khariah, Arbihlang Suchiang, Thlamuana Darnei, Laljoy Darni, Mary Jone Ngamlai, Lalchonpari Theite and Samiran Rishi.

The teachers informed that as per rules they have fulfilled the criteria put up by the NCERT which mandates clearing of MTET examination for the post of Assistant Teachers in Government Schools.

Mary Jone Ngamlai said, “A meeting was convened by the Minister of Education, Lahkmen Rymbui with the representatives of contractual teachers who are on agitation for regular appointment as Assistant Teachers. During the meeting the Minister clarified that regular appointment can be made only after following the process as per NCERT regulation adopted by the State which includes passing D. El. Ed and MTET examination; no regular appointment will be given without clearing the above examination.”

Furthermore, the teachers demanded for an appointment from the government on the basis that they meet the required criteria for the Assistant Teacher’s post.

Ngamlai further stated, “We are giving two weeks’ time; if there is no positive response from the government, we have no other option but to come out on the streets and do agitation to demand for our job”.
