SHILLONG, JUL 15: The Kutumba Surakshya Parishad has objected to the Khasi Students’ Union’s reported demand for demolition of a common worship hall inside the CBI Office in Shillong, describing it as a threat to India’s secular fabric.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Parishad President Satya Ranjan Borah said the call sets a “wrong precedent” and goes against constitutional rights.

He termed the demand “anti-social, anti-constitutional and anti-national,” adding that such actions could trigger communal unrest.

Borah recalled the 2018 Mawjymbuin Cave issue in Mawsynram, when Meghalaya authorities had assured his organization of protecting the state’s secular ethos.

He claimed the latest development has shaken trust in the state government’s commitment to the Constitution and to religious freedom.

“India is a secular country and every citizen has the basic right to worship as per his or her belief. We must not support activities that create social and communal tension,” Borah said.

The Parishad has urged Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to step in and ensure that people across the state are allowed equal freedom to practice religion without obstruction.

Headquartered in Guwahati, Kutumba Surakshya Parishad says it works in several states to promote national unity and communal harmony.
