Shillong, Dec 31: Troops from BSF Meghalaya’s 110 Battalion on Saturday rescued 31 buffaloes who had been cruelly squeezed onto vehicles at the International Border of East Khasi Hills. These buffaloes had been transported there to be smuggled to Bangladesh.

Acting on specific tip-off, BSF confiscated buffalo laden trucks on Ichamati- Shella road close to International Boundary. Buffaloes were found crammed inside two trucks and tethered mercilessly in a pathetic condition. On seeing BSF approaching, both the drivers ran into the forest leaving these trucks behind.

On the same day, BSF’s 172 Battalion also seized cosmetic items worth Rs 8.5 Lakhs from the International Border of East Jaintia hills.

The Border Security Force has intensified its vigil on vulnerable routes/patches and dominating the sensitive areas by deploying additional manpower and surveillance gadgets. BSF Meghalaya has rescued 3308 cattle this year from the clutches of smugglers, a press statement by PRO of BSF Meghalaya read.
