5th Meghalaya Games 2024 prepares for spectacular kick-off

Shillong, Jan 8: With just one more week remaining for the kick-off of the historic 5th Meghalaya Games 2024, the MSOA – Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC) is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the Games are conducted smoothly.

In this regard, the GTCC held an important meeting on January 5, 2024, at the MSOA Office, JN Stadium, Polo Grounds to discuss the final details of preparations for the Games in Tura, West Garo Hills District. The meeting was chaired by MSOA Working President, John F Kharshiing, in presence of General Secretary, Finely L. Pariat, and other officials of the MSOA. The meeting was also attended by the Chef de Mission, Asst Chef de Mission, President and Secretaries, Competition Managers, of the State Sports Associations.

The meeting was also attended online virtually by the MSOA and CDMs officials from Garo Hills wherein a number of issues relating to Athletes, Transportation, Accommodation, Venues, FOP, Opening and Closing Ceremony, Competition Schedules, etc were discussed.

The meeting was also addressed online from Tura by Director, Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, Isawanda Laloo, and other sports officials and consultants. The Director informed that all stakeholders and various committees in Tura are working tirelessly to welcome and ensure a successful conduct of the games and thanked the MSOA for its close cooperation in the preparations and wished the Athletes all the very best in their upcoming competitions.

This will be the third time in 4 years that the Meghalaya Games is hosted in the state and will be the first time that it is being hosted in a district in Garo Hills. Also, this year, the Games will feature 3,000 athletes approximately across all districts and disciplines. It may be recalled that the first Meghalaya Games was held in 2001 the 2nd in 2004 and was then the 3rd revived in 2020 after 16 years followed with the 4th Meghalaya Games in 2022 and now the historic 5th Meghalaya Games in 2024 hosted in sub-city Tura, West Garo Hills District.

The event will kick off with a Torch Relay ceremony that will begin in Shillong on January 9 and conclude in Tura. Along the way, the Torch will travel to Jowai, Mairang, Nongstoin and Williamnagar and conclude in Tura on January 15, 2024.
