SHILLONG, JUL 17: Twelve inmates between 70 and 80 years are currently lodged in jails across Meghalaya, the High Court was informed on Thursday.
Hearing a petition, a division bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W Diengdoh perused a status report filed by the State and submitted by the Additional Advocate General K Khan pursuant to its order dated June 10.
As per the report, the break-up is: “five persons in Shillong Jail; one person in Nongpoh Jail; one person in Jowai Jail; four persons in Tura Jail; and one person in Williamnagar Jail.”
“Considering the aforesaid, we request Mr Khan to give us the details of the cases pending against these persons… and the stage at which their cases stand,” the bench said.
The Court also directed the AAG to inform “how long these persons have been in custody and whether they suffer from any ailment/disability.”
The bench further took on record a report on the visit to Williamnagar Jail submitted by Amicus Curiae T Yangi B.
With the Amicus citing “personal difficulty,” the matter has been adjourned to August 10, 2026.
