Agartala, July 23: A supporter of one of the rival factions of Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) was spotted openly carrying a gun in front of police personnel, creating a stir on social media.

Opposition parties, including TIPRA Motha, CPIM, and Congress, have taken this opportunity to criticize the ruling BJP, asserting that this incident reflects poorly on the state’s law and order situation.

The tensions between the two warring factions of TCA, led by ‘ousted’ president Tapan Lodh and incumbent secretary Tapas Ghosh, escalated on Saturday as both groups traded accusations of corruption and illegal activities.

In response to the escalating situation, a substantial police contingent has been deployed at the TCA office to prevent potential clashes. However, during this period, a video surfaced showing an individual allegedly concealing a pistol in their waistband, prompting media attention and public concern.

All opposition parties including the TIPRA Motha, CPIM and Congress have strongly condemned the ongoing dispute within TCA and directed their criticism towards the BJP and Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who served as the former president of TCA until a year ago, for what they perceive as a lack of action against the individual carrying the gun in front of the police, particularly near the West Agartala police station.

The opposition leaders have also expressed apprehensions about the broader implications of such a situation, suggesting that the state’s law and order situation may be a cause for concern in more remote areas as well.

In a separate incident on the same day, former state cricket team captain Timir Chanda, who currently serves as the incumbent Vice-President of TCA, alleged that he and Secretary Tapash Ghosh were physically assaulted by members of the opposing factions when they were entering the association building.

In response to these developments, Ghosh issued a notification, declaring Tapan Lodh’s disqualification as the president of Tripura Cricket Association, citing the association’s rules and regulations.

The situation further escalated when Lodh and his supporters reportedly broke into the TCA building in the presence of a Sub-Divisional Magistrate, raising concerns about potential threats and the safety of important document.

Amidst the ongoing allegations and counter-allegations, a general body meeting of TCA led by Lodh was held, deciding to initiate an inquiry into the alleged “irregularities” regarding the installation of floodlights at the MBB cricket stadium.

Lodh, on the other hand, has refuted receiving any official notification of his removal from the position of TCA President, arguing that his position cannot be revoked according to the law. He expressed his intention to escalate the matter to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) soon.
