Shillong, Aug 7: A general assembly (Dorbar Hima) convened by the Syiem of Hima Langrin, Nangtei Sing Syiemiong, turned violent on Friday, leaving several members of the public and police personnel injured.
The meeting was held at Phlangdiloin village.
According to reports, the violence erupted after allegations that the Syiem did not allow the residents to raise questions on matters relating to the administration of the Hima, particularly allegations concerning the handling of Hima land.
Several who attended the Dorbar alleged that those present were angered by what they described as the Syiem’s high-handed approach. They claimed they were denied the opportunity to question him on issues relating to land, taxes, governance and other matters affecting the Hima.
They further alleged that the Syiem attempted to abruptly conclude the meeting without allowing anyone to ask questions or providing clear explanations on the issues raised.
According to those present, the situation quickly escalated, leading to clashes between members of the public and police personnel deployed to maintain law and order.
Witnesses claimed that two to three civilians sustained injuries after police allegedly fired tear gas shells while attempting to disperse the crowd.
Police have confirmed that violence broke out during the meeting and said that around two to three civilians, along with several police personnel, were injured in the incident.
Following the incident, South West Khasi Hills Police have strengthened security in the area to ensure the situation remains under control.
