Guwahati, Dec 23: At least two people were killed and 48 police personnel, including two senior IPS officers, were injured in violent protests in Karbi Anglong that escalated on Monday.

Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh was among those targeted when a mob attacked security forces in Kheroni area of West Karbi Anglong.

Appealing for calm, the DGP urged protesters to refrain from violence and cooperate with the administration. He said security personnel were attacked from two sides despite repeated attempts at dialogue, forcing the police to respond.

“They attacked our personnel with stones, arrows and other locally made weapons. Some police personnel are seriously injured,” Singh said.

He added that additional forces have been deployed at sensitive locations to prevent further escalation and maintain public order. Senior police officials are also engaging directly with agitating groups to defuse tensions and restore normalcy.

The DGP warned that those involved in torching shops and other acts of violence would be identified and proceeded against in accordance with the law. He said police used tear gas and other non-lethal crowd-control measures to disperse the mob.

Meanwhile, eight battalions of security forces, along with five companies of the Central Reserve Police Force, have been deployed in violence-hit West Karbi Anglong to bring the situation under control, officials said on Tuesday evening.

Mobile internet data services remain suspended across Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts, while the curfew imposed on Monday continues as authorities work to restore peace.
