Shillong, Aug 18: West Garo Hills police have arrested ACHIK Advisor and former MCS officer Laben Ch Marak for his alleged role in instigating the mob leading to the violence in Tura on July 24, 2023.
He was arrested on Thursday and remanded to police custody till August 21, 2023. With this arrest, the tally of arrested persons has gone up to 51.
Marak was one of the ACHIK leaders who was on indefinite hunger strike before the meeting with CM Conrad K Sangam on July 24 at CM’s Mini Secretariat in Tura. The organization had been demanding winter capital in Tura and backlog policy or retrospective implementation of the roster system citing years of neglect for the Garo community.
Earlier, after learning that police was looking for them, Laben Ch Marak, along with ACHIK general secretary Bernita R Marak, and Co-Chairman of GHSMC Balkarin Ch Marak had sought for anticipatory bail after an FIR was filed by UBI Bitcing N Marak, Circle Inspector (Sadar), West Garo Hills. However, their bail plea was rejected by the High Court on August 11, 2023.
They have been booked under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Meghalaya (Maintenance of Public Order) Act and Prevention to Damage to Public Property Act.
Police is currently looking for Bernita R Marak and Balkarin Ch Marak.
About 18 police, Home Guards and CRPF personnel sustained injuries during the Tura violence incident on July 24, 2023 and about 21 Government and private vehicle were also damaged and burned, with many doors and windows of the CM’s Mini Secretariat in Tura being damaged. Fortunately, the Chief Minister and other Government officials, who were inside the mini-secretariat during the violence and the prime target, were unharmed.
