Agartala, Dec 14: At least five jawans of Tripura police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) were injured after a skirmish between cops and villagers at Sidhai Mohanpur village in West Tripura.
According to reports, the incident happened when the police destroyed illegal cannabis plantation in the locality on Thursday afternoon.
“After getting information, a contingent of Tripura police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) reached Panchabati area in Sidhai Mohanpur today (Thursday) to destroy cannabis. But suddenly, our police team came under attack on their way back after the operation,” said a police official.
Five policemen were injured and police vehicles damaged during the attack by the villagers. The injured policemen were immediately rushed to hospital and after treatment they were released.
A case has been registered on the incident and investigation has begun to nab those involved in the attack on the police contingent.
According to police, around 60,000 ganja plants were destroyed in the operation.
“A sustained initiative is underway across the state to destroy illegal cannabis plantations and at least 28 lakh cannabis plants were destroyed throughout the year till now, estimating damage of around Rs. 140 crore to the illegal drug economy,” said the police official.
