Shillong, July 23: The North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) opposed the sudden implementation of the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 stating that the most of the colleges in the State are not ready for the new NEP.

“The NEP will pose a challenge as there is no proper infrastructure in the state and that the state lacks teachers who teach a particular subject”, said Mandor Diengdoh the NEHUSU finance secretary.

Diengdoh said that the announcement made by the university VC Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla was very sudden and hasty decision as it should have been properly discussed with all colleges before taking the decision, so colleges can prepare the requirements.

However, Vice-president of the union Easterson Sohtun said that the state is still not ready for the NEP as there are colleges in rural areas that have only one course/stream and that there are no teachers teaching coding. He also said that most students are not ready for the fourth year.

Notably, Prof Shukla said the University has already implemented the NEP 2020 for the Post Graduate (PG) students for the academic session 2022-23, while for the Under Graduate (UG) students, the University has already circulated the letters to all the colleges affiliated to NEHU to implement the NEP from upcoming academic session starting from August 1, 2023.

On being asked if all affiliated colleges are ready to implement the new policy, Prof Shukla said all the principles of the colleges were sent the letter, however, he is yet to know the exact number of colleges willing and not willing to implement the NEP. He further said the colleges who are not willing to implement the new policy should come up with the list of hindrances and submit them to the University.
