Shillong, March 11: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday informed the Assembly that the amount given to Self Help Groups (SHGs) under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihood Mission (DAY-NULM) is likely to increase to Rs 25,000.

The development comes following the state government’s request to the Centre to enhance the start-up fund for Self Help Groups under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihood Mission.

Currently, an amount of Rs 10,000 is provided as start-up fund in the form of Revolving Fund per SHG under DAY-NULM.

“Information has come that the government of India has agreed to enhance the amount and it will now be increased from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000,” informed the CM during the Question Hour.

He also assured to dovetail the DAY-NULM with many schemes of the state government to ensure more and more schemes are given through the SHGs.

Additionally, he informed that the government has been able to create thousands of ‘Lakhpati Didi’ during the past 6-7 years in rural areas. This is because the process of organzing the SHGs is easier in rural areas.

“However, we were not able to replicate this in urban areas as it is more difficult to bring people to work together,” Sangma said while assuring to take steps to ensure SHGs are promoted in urban areas.

Earlier in his reply, deputy chief minister in-charge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar informed that since 2014, 510 SGHs have been formed and registered in the Urban areas of Meghalaya under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Liveihood Mission (DAY-NULM). Of these, 41 SHGs are non-functional.
