Guwahati, July 21: Eight people have died after a landslide inside the under-construction tunnel of the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project in South Sikkim’s Namchi district, officials said on Tuesday. Twelve workers have been rescued, while more than 18 others are believed to remain trapped, although authorities say the exact number has yet to be confirmed.
Rescue operations have been slowed by heavy rain, unstable conditions inside the tunnel, and a suspected methane gas leak, which has made it difficult for emergency teams to reach those trapped.
The accident occurred at around 3.09 pm on Monday at the Samardung tunnel in the Jholungey area. Officials said the landslide blocked the tunnel and is believed to have released methane from underground rock formations, creating a toxic atmosphere that has severely complicated rescue efforts.
Earlier, Namchi Deputy Commissioner Anupa Tamling said Fire and Emergency Services personnel made two attempts to enter the tunnel but were forced to retreat because of the high concentration of methane. The first National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team later evacuated them before a specialised team equipped with breathing apparatus entered the tunnel to continue the operation.
Workers who escaped the tunnel told officials they heard a loud blast-like sound moments before the landslide and ran to safety.
A multi-agency rescue operation involving the NDRF, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Sikkim Police, Fire and Emergency Services, NHPC, the Namchi district administration, the Health Department and local residents is continuing at the site.
Some rescuers were also reportedly injured during the operation because of the hazardous conditions inside the tunnel.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has been closely monitoring the rescue efforts and coordinating with all concerned departments to ensure that all available resources are deployed.
Authorities have restricted traffic around the project site to facilitate the movement of rescue personnel and equipment. Rescue operations are continuing, with officials expected to issue further updates as teams work to reach those still trapped underground.
