Shillong Traffic volunteer arrested for extorting Rs 15,000 from Assam visitors

SHILLONG, JAN 13: A home guard volunteer was arrested after a video surfaced showing him demanding Rs 15,000 from Assam residents as a fine for alleged traffic rule violations.

The incident occurred on December 26, 2025, when Reganson Kharlor (35), posted at Madanrting Traffic Branch, stopped a Maruti Suzuki 800 car (No. AS-01-F-1460), allegedly threatening the occupants and demanding Rs 1 lakh.

The vehicle occupants who pleaded with him were subsequently taken towards Madanrting Taxi Stand, where an amount of ₹15,000/- was illegally extorted as ‘fine’ by the said Home Guard Volunteer from two of the occupants who had withdrawn money from a nearby ATM.

“In this regard, a suo-motu case has been registered…The (accused) Home Guard Volunteer has been arrested, removed from all duties and shall be produced before the Court as per procedure,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told reporters on Tuesday.

“The victims have been contacted and shall be appearing before the police for recording of their statements,” he added.
Further, the SP informed that CCTV footage from the relevant locations is being examined to establish the sequence of events.

“The East Khasi Hills District Police, including the Shillong Traffic Police, reiterate their commitment to public service and maintaining a zero-tolerance policy towards extortion, abuse of authority and any form of high handedness,” he stated.
