Itanagar, Aug 9: Security forces have intensified counterinsurgency operations in eastern Arunachal Pradesh after a fierce pre-dawn encounter between militants and the Assam Rifles in Tirap district today.

The exchange of fire occurred around 3 am when militants from the NSCN and Ulfa (Independent) targeted the Company Operating Base (COB) of the 44 Assam Rifles at Noglo under Lazu police station. Alert troops swiftly retaliated with heavy firepower, foiling the attack.

The gunfight lasted about 10 minutes, with no casualties reported on either side.

Sources said the CRPF and Arunachal Pradesh Police have joined the Assam Rifles in the ongoing operations. Intelligence inputs indicate militants may be planning strikes on security forces and vital installations ahead of Independence Day.
