Shillong, May 21: The East Jaintia Hills district administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, within the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Khliehriat following a protest that allegedly disrupted normal functioning of government offices.
According to an order issued by District Magistrate Manish Kumar, the decision came after members and supporters of the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU), the Jaintia National Council (JNC), and villagers from the Daistong area staged a protest demonstration inside the Deputy Commissioner’s office campus on Wednesday.
The order stated that during the protest, demonstrators allegedly entered the office building, creating “tension and disturbance” within the premises and affecting normal government functioning while posing a threat to public peace and safety.
Citing concerns over possible obstruction, disturbance of public tranquillity, breakdown of law and order, and damage to public property, the district administration prohibited the assembly of five or more persons within the boundary of the Deputy Commissioner’s office complex.
The order, issued under Section 163 BNSS, came into force with immediate effect and will remain in force until further orders.
The administration warned that any violation of the order would invite legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with other relevant legal provisions.
