Shillong, March 28: In a continued crackdown on illegal coal mining, East Jaintia Hills police on Friday raided an unauthorised mining site at Wailong under Sutnga village, arresting nine workers from the spot.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, police conducted the operation and detected active coal extraction at the site. Officials confirmed that all nine individuals found working inside the illegal mine were taken into custody.

A case has been registered at Khliehriat Police Station, and a detailed investigation is now underway to trace the supply chain and identify those involved in the transportation and trade of illegally mined coal.

Police said the operation is part of sustained enforcement efforts in the district to curb illegal mining activities, which have long been a concern in the region.

The Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills, reiterated the district police’s zero-tolerance stance against illegal coal mining and related operations, warning of strict action against all those involved in the network.
