Shillong, Nov 16: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) consisting of teachers, non-teaching staff, and students from North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) decided to call off their indefinite protest on Thursday after a meeting with Vice-Chancellor Prof PS Shukla to discuss the former’s nine-point charter of demands.

The indefinite protest had been ongoing since November 13.

JAC Chairman, Prof. Lakhon Kma, stated that the committee resolved to end the protest while maintaining their demands. The decision aims to ensure the resumption of regular classes, scheduled to recommence on November 17, and to enable smooth academic activities.

Prof. Kma mentioned that the Vice-Chancellor assured them of convening an Academic Council (AC) meeting in the first week of December. Additionally, the VC pledged to establish a committee to thoroughly assess the JAC’s demands.

The nine demands relate to immediate removal of a technical officer/senior consultant, immediate appointment of statutory officers and university engineer, deteriorating condition of the university health centre, relieving of teaching and technical staffs from ministerial duties, upload of NEHU act, statutes and ordinance on the NEHU website, holding of regular convocation, marking system, inclusion of elected members of NEHUSU as representatives in the Academic Council and review of educationally backward area quota from block to village level.
