Mon, July 24: Nearly a week after a rain-triggered landslide devastated parts of Mon town, authorities are set to call off search and rescue operations on Friday, with six bodies recovered and two people still missing.

The July 19 landslide, triggered by incessant rainfall, buried houses in Defence Colony of Walo Ward and Thamnan Ward, leaving a trail of destruction.

Rescue teams comprising the District Administration, District Executive Force, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), 42 Assam Rifles, police, civil society organisations and local volunteers have been combing the debris since the tragedy.

Four bodies were recovered on the day of the disaster, while two more were found on July 20. Despite days of intensive searches under difficult weather and hazardous terrain, two missing persons remain untraced.

Officials said the search operation, supported extensively by local volunteers and community organisations, is expected to be formally concluded on Friday after nearly a week of recovery efforts.
