MHA advisor-led team visits violence-hit Manipur, engages with officials, organisations

Imphal, Jan 23: A three-member Central team, led by Ministry of Home Affairs Advisor A.K. Mishra, arrived in Manipur on Monday.

The team, accompanied by two Joint Directors from the Intelligence Bureau, Mandeep Singh Tuli, and Rajesh Kumble, held meetings with government officials and leaders of various organisations.

The MHA team’s visit to Manipur, a part of India plagued by violence, is significant because some groups have reportedly vowed to start a large-scale agitation if the government does not act against ‘the militants and the immigrants from Myanmar.’

The team met with elected leaders, representatives of other organisations, and government officials shortly after their arrival.

The team arrived in the riot-torn northeastern state just days after unrest erupted in Manipur again. Two police commandos were killed and several more injured on January 17 when heavily armed militants targeted them in Moreh.

The next day, five civilians were killed by unknown assailants in two different instances in Manipur, according to authorities. Four citizens were murdered by unknown armed miscreants in Ningthoukhong Kha Khunou, Bishnupur district, and one in Kangchup Chingkhong, Kangpokpi district.

Manipur has been in unrest since May 3, 2023, after ethnic violence erupted between two communities in the state.
