SHILLONG, MAR 23: The state police on Saturday issued a public advisory urging victims of demand notes by banned militant outfits to refrain from making any kind of payment to such groups.

Director General of Police (DGP) Dr LR Bishnoi said it has come to the notice of the police department that many people have been served extortion notes by the banned organization such as Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) etc through various social media sites/apps (Whatsapp, Telegram/SMS etc).

He said that it is imperative for every citizen to understand that providing financial support to banned organizations, directly or indirectly, is a serious offence under the law.

“Such support not only fuels illegal and anti-national activities but also endangers the lives of innocent individuals and undermines the stability of our society. Engaging in any financial transaction with such unlawful entities not only violates the law but also undermines our collective efforts to safeguard our nation against terrorism and unlawful activities,” Bishnoi said.

Cautioning the general public to refrain from any kind of payment to any persons/organizations, the DGP said that the payment to such outfit(s) will attract the provision of sections 11, 13 & 17 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 as well as Section 4 of Prevention of Money Laundering Act and Section 109 IPC. They should report such unlawful demands to the police for necessary action, for which their name and credential will be kept confidential, he added.
