Shillong, Aug 31: The Meghalaya High Court has directed continuation of its interim order directing the state government to accept alternative identification documents for individuals who are unable to produce an Aadhaar number or card.
“Our interim order dated 21st July, 2025 permitting the said other documents to be considered by the authority till an Aadhaar card is issued will continue and be operative in favour of all applicants for Aadhaar card who have submitted their application and such applications are pending,” the division bench comprising Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice W Diengdoh said in its order passed on Saturday (August 30) after hearing a PIL filed by social activist Greneth M Sangma.
The Unique Identification Authority of India has filed its affidavit-in-opposition even before directions on that behalf were made by the Court.
The PIL will be listed for further hearing on September 17, 2025.
