SHILLONG, MAY 22: The state authorities have decided to evict hawkers encroaching on the Right of Way (RoW) along the newly constructed Shillong-Dawki road, citing high risk to the public and vehicular movement.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) RM Kurbah on May 15.
The meeting was convened after the Manager (P), NHIDCL, PMU-Mylliem, raised concerns about hawkers occupying multiple locations along the stretch from Rilbong Point to 3½ Mile Upper Shillong and 7th Mile Upper Shillong. Concerns were also flagged over the setting up of a parking lot at Rilbong Point.

“As this encroachment may pose high risk to the general public, the hawkers, as well as for vehicular movement, the meeting decided that officials from the Police department, PWD (Roads), NH Division Shillong and NHIDCL should collaborate to evict the hawkers,” an official statement said on Friday.
To enforce the order, it said the NHIDCL has been directed to put markings along the acquired RoW.
The Superintendent of Police (Traffic) will place barricades to restrict parking of vehicles within the RoW and depute police personnel at site.
“The meeting also decided that NHIDCL, PWD (Roads) NH Division, and Police personnel will jointly carry out the eviction after prior awareness is given to all concerned,” the statement said.

The Shillong-Dawki road is a key corridor and officials stressed that encroachments obstruct traffic flow and endanger pedestrians and vendors operating within the RoW.
