Tura, Jan 9: The town of Tura has become the citadel of sports personalities from the State as players begin to arrive for the much awaited sporting extravaganza.
Though the official inauguration ceremony is on Jan 15 being inaugurated by the President of India, the football matches are set to begin from Wednesday.
At ISBT, players in large contingents are undergoing registration.
In a recent development, 16 men’s football players from West Garo Hills have arrived at the ISBT Tura for the registration process ahead of the highly anticipated Meghalaya Games. The athletes, brimming with enthusiasm, mark the early wave of participants gearing up for the upcoming sporting event.
Blend of Cultural Exchange and Fitness
Meghalaya Games 2024 is set to make history by incorporating traditional sports from Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities. Going beyond typical sports events, this inclusion aims to reconnect the youth with the rich tribal heritage, emphasising that sports have always been an integral part of tribal culture.
Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma had earlier mentioned that the 3000 participants will have the opportunity to explore various regions and engage with fellow youths, fostering a deeper understanding of the area. Additionally, he highlighted the State Government’s intent to align the Meghalaya Games with the Fit India program, aiming to promote fitness and well-being among participants.
CM’s Vision for Meghalaya Games
He also underscored the fact that over the last 17 years, the Meghalaya Games was held only twice. Moving forward, he emphasised the commitment to hosting the Games annually, with Nongstoin or another district being considered as the potential venue for the next edition.
It must be noted that after a pause, the Meghalaya Games, which initially began in 2001, were revived in 2019. But the event is set to become an annual affair starting in 2024.
