Imphal, July 8: Over 150 medical students belonging to tribal communities, under the banner of Joint Students Body (JSB), organized a protest rally on Saturday at the Churachandpur Medical College campus to condemn the ongoing violence in Manipur.

The protest witnessed the participation of tribal medical students from prominent institutions such as JNIMS, RIMS, Shija, and the Medical Directorate. Notably, parents of the students also joined in solidarity with their children.

According to reports, more than 150 tribal medical students have been stranded in Churachandpur since May 3, 2023, when violence erupted in the State. These students, who normally study in Imphal, have reportedly faced targeted attacks, with the intent to harm and eliminate them.

The JSB highlighted the lack of alternative arrangements for these students to continue their education in other colleges within Northeast India or in the mainland. While their counterparts in the valley areas have already resumed classes and even conducted semester examinations, these students have not received any information or options to join their classes elsewhere.

In a press statement, the JSB expressed deep concern about the students’ future being jeopardized and stressed the value of the hard-earned seats in their respective medical colleges. They accused the Chief Minister of neglecting their plight and being reluctant to make any arrangements for their continued education.

Emphasizing their tribal identity, the students lamented the lack of attention from the authorities and appealed to them to take immediate action to ensure the continuation of their classes.
