Manipur: 3 killed in last 48 hours, situation remains tense, CM pays floral tribute to deceased

Imphal, July 2: Manipur Police on Sunday said that the situation remains tense in some places with sporadic incidents of firing/congregation of unruly mob during the last 48 hours. However, situation was normal in most districts.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Control room of Manipur Police said that in the past 24 hours, Manipur Police and Central forces conducted search operations in the vulnerable and fringe areas in both hill and valley districts.

On Sunday, at around 5am, unknown armed miscreants coming from adjoining hills fired at the village volunteers stationed at Khoijumantabi Hills, Bishnupur killing three local village volunteers. Following the incident, Police launched an operation in the area and miscreants were repelled.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh paid his last respect to the three local village volunteers who were killed by armed miscreants in the wee hours of Sunday.

CM also met villagers and listened to them. He also visited the spot where the local village volunteers were shot.

The statement further said “Yesterday (01.07.2023), CRPF and Jiribam District Police conducted frisking & checking at Uchathol Village (about 7 Kms South Eastward) of JBM PS. During frisking & checking one person was detained and the following items were seized from his possession (1) 0.722 kg of explosives suspected to be Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil (AMNF), (2) 5 mtres & 79 cms of Cordex wire and (3) one Motorcycle Avenger B/No AS11X9771.”

“Yesterday (01.07.2023), 5 civilians were detained by some villagers in Gwaltabi and Urangpat area under Yaingangpokpi PS. They were rescued by security forces and handed over to the Officer-in charge, Yaingangpokpi today (02.07.2023),” it added.

Manipur Police also informed that about 118 Nakas/ Checkpoints are installed in different Districts of Manipur, both in the hills and the valley and Police has detained 217 persons in connection with violations in different districts of the State.

“The checking at the nakas/checkpoints are intensified round the clock in order to prevent unwanted incidents,” statement said.

The statement also said that the “movement of essential items is ensured along NH-37. Strict security measures are taken up in all vulnerable locations and security convoy is provided in sensitive stretches in order to ensure free and safe movement of the vehicles.”

In violence hit Manipur, three arms and six bombs have been recovered during last 24 hours.

Manipur Police also made an appeal to the general public to extend all possible help in bringing normalcy in the state.

The state police also provided a phone number- 9233522822 for the public to clarify any kind of rumour

Further, Manipur police also made an appeal to the people of the state to return and deposit arms, ammunition and explosives to the police or security forces immediately.
