Imphal, Apr 17: At least 21 civilians were injured, and five people were detained after fresh violence broke out in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Thursday.

According to reports, tensions flared when protesters intercepted three private vehicles carrying armed security personnel in civilian clothes.

“The incident occurred around 1:30 pm near Thinungei when locals blocked the movement of the security team following rumours about the identity and purpose of those inside the vehicles,” a police official said.

A large crowd soon gathered and halted the convoy. The situation escalated when some individuals turned aggressive, attacking the vehicles and setting two of them on fire, the official added.

Additional police forces were rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control, leading to clashes between security personnel and protesters.

Police said at least 21 protesters sustained minor injuries during the confrontation, while five individuals were taken into custody.

In the aftermath, the district magistrate imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita from 5 pm until further notice, restricting public movement in the area.

Tensions in the district have remained high since April 7, when a suspected militant attack in Tronglaobi village killed two young siblings and left their mother critically injured.
