Shillong, April 17: Just a couple of days ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 for the two Parliamentary Seats, Shillong and Tura, the Election Department in Meghalaya is all set to conduct a free and fair election.
Although the voter turnout in 2019 was 71.42 percent, this year the department is optimistic that it will increase, considering the enthusiasm and campaign participation.
In fact, the department has witnessed a rise in the number of cases or Persons Bound Down under various sections of the CrPC, totaling 1938, and 3 FIRs were filed for poll-related campaigns until April 11, 2024.
So far, the total seizures in both Shillong and Tura parliamentary seats before and after the announcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) stand at Rs. 43.13 crore.
“All required arrangements have been made, even taking into consideration the weather conditions. Around 30,000 to 35,000 people will be involved in this election in the state, serving in various capacities, including reserved personnel and security personnel,” mentioned Chief Electoral Officer BDR Tiwari on Tuesday.
He added that the matter concerning school children participating in a political campaign has come to their notice, and they have taken cognizance.
The CEO has requested a report from the respective District Election Officer (DEO).
