Local shopkeeper in Jowai rescues rare bird, saves it from becoming a meal

Shillong, Nov 1: Jarman Lamare, a resident of Moosakhia village who runs a small shop at Iawmusiang Jowai, on Friday handed over a wild fowl locally known as Syiar khloo, to staff of the Wildlife Department of West Jaintia Hills.

He said the Pheasant came to the very busy Iawmusiang Market on Friday. He saw the fowl initially rested on the wire then it fell and along with his friends they captured it.

According to Melanie Passah, Project Manager Foundation for Ecological Security (FES), the bird looks like a female Kalij Pheasant which can be found in the north eastern region of India.

Lamare, who is also a Deacon of the Presbyterian church, Moosakhia, said that it was lucky that he caught the pheasant otherwise people were ready to feast on it.
