Jowai, Jan 25: The week-long sporting extravaganza of the 6th Meghalaya Games concluded on Saturday at the Kiang Nangbah Football Stadium in Jowai, with East Khasi Hills District crowned “Champions of Champions” after securing a remarkable total of 381 medals.

The Meghalaya Games 2025 has brought together over 3,500 athletes from across the state competing in 29 sports disciplines, set several milestones, making it the largest sporting event in history of the State.

The closing ceremony was graced by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar as the Chief Guest, along with Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri as the Guest of Honour, local MLA Weiladmiki Shylla, and Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) President John F. Kharshiing.

Addressing the gathering, Dhar lauded the success of the games, stating, “We are proud to say we’re fit to host the National Games.” He also highlighted the strides made by the Sports Department under the MDA government, including increased funding and infrastructure development, with the Mawkhanu football stadium poised to become India’s largest and solidify Meghalaya as the soccer capital of India.

East Khasi Hills dominated the medal tally with 149 gold, 105 silver, and 127 bronze medals. West Jaintia Hills finished as the first runner-up with 108 medals, while Ri-Bhoi secured third place with 104 medals.

It maybe noted, for the first time, seven para-athletes participated, showcasing their grit and determination, and traditional games like An’ding Oka drew significant attention, with 87 youths taking part.

The mascot, “U Kiang,” the Clouded Leopard, was a crowd favorite during the ceremony, adding a festive touch as it interacted with athletes and guests. The Meghalaya anthem and the theme song, “Niom Beit Naphang,” further elevated the celebratory atmosphere.

John F. Kharshiing, in his address, reflected on the evolution of the Meghalaya Games, which have grown from 14 sports disciplines in 2020 to 29 disciplines this year, including four demonstration sports and the introduction of para-sports. He emphasized the importance of perseverance, citing the “10-year or 10,000-hour rule” for achieving excellence. He also announced that medal winners at the games would be eligible for sports scholarships and cash prizes, inspiring young athletes to pursue their dreams.

The 6th Meghalaya Games also celebrated inspiring stories, such as the determination of Wallambok Lyngdoh, who led young climbers to success, and the vision of Under-17 football standout Sanfida Nongrum, who aspires to represent India.
